Newcomers to the world of paranormal research writing (and there are now many, due to the growth of internet and satellite networks where the material has become a staple), would do well to pay special attention to the latest offering by authors, Brad Steiger and Sherry Hansen Steiger. “Real Encounters, Different Dimensions, and Otherworldly Beings” cuts a wide path into the supernatural/paranormal realms, focusing on the highly strange encounters reported by witnesses and experiencers with various types of entities; astral beings, extraterrestrials, spirit guides, underwater inhabitants; as well as a healthy dose of various disembodied types like poltergeist and monsters.

This is not the usual “shock and awe” type paranormal anthology, rather, a well curated and tightly integrated tour of strange realms and beings, along with a thoughtful line of commentary that informs and compliments the various chapters. In fact, it is the commentary articles, written by Brad and Sherry, which makes this collection such a stand out.

In a field of publishing where presentation is often either dry research, or fear-laden hype, the Steigers weave a type of paranormal “unified field theory” that connects disparate phenomena like alien abduction and angelic encounters with spectral entities and animal spirits. Psychology, spirituality, and mythology also provide elements to the Steiger continuum that both inform, and open to observation, the experiences of the narratives.

We also get glimpses into the people inside the stories that provide the human touches the Steigers are noted for in their works: Sean Casteel’s “My Personal Encounter Story” has a rare account of Budd Hopkins advising Casteel against the use of hypnosis (the reasons are in the story).

The historical backdrop of the book includes a look back in UFOlogy at contactee George Adamski and his “cosmic gospel” and an insider ear on a conversation between the Steigers, scientist/parapsychologist, Andrija Puharich, and Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry on alien contactees and the human potential to create virtual worlds!

Morphing UFOs, an “added-time” (as opposed to lost time) experience, an MIB abduction, and multidimensional vortexes all comprise the rich color of experiences, places, and people (mostly) that populate this diverse paranormal tapestry. The book also features rich illustration, much provided by award winning illustrator Richard Pustanio in an almost art book layout style—worthy of a library or coffee table nook. “Real Encounters, Different Dimensions, and Otherworldly Beings” is both on par with the Steigers’ usual output, and a cut above the mainstream paranormal trade—it is a keeper and one you will go back to for research or just for something creepy and warm.

Chris Holly: Hypnotism and Abductees – How Those Taken Differ In Opinion

Chris Holly: Hypnotism and Abductees – How Those Taken Differ In Opinion

“…the subject of using hypnotism as a method of recall is split between allowing hypnotism attempts and those who absolutely want nothing to do with it.” -Chris Holly

I have spent the last decade talking to, interviewing, and writing about people who have had encounters with abduction, lost time or sightings up close and personal with unidentified beings and or objects, I have made it a habit to ask those involved with these topics what they think about hypnotism being used to induce the memory of those who cannot remember what took place during their encounters.
I know it is widely accepted in the paranormal community to use hypnotism as part of a research attempt to try to bring forward information from those who have had experiences that include memory loss. I also know from years of talking to the people who experience this events that the subject of using hypnotism as a method of recall is split between allowing hypnotism attempts and those who absolutely want nothing to do with it.
I have found over the years that those who come forward to report strange experiences fall into two categories. One is of people who do not seem to have encountered any fear from their strange event or harm and the other, of course, are the people who have been traumatized, terrified, and at times physically harmed by what they either saw or experienced.
It quickly became apparent to me that those who had encounters that did not frighten or cause harm to the people were the majority of those who agreed to be hypnotized.
On the other side of the coin are the people who had experiences that were terrifying, upsetting and in many cases caused physical harm and trauma to them.  This group of experiencer I found by large majority to be against any form of hypnotism. The fact is many were as terrified of being hypnotized as they were of the actual event.
I do not interview or write often about abductions where the experience is reported as harmless or where those involved are in no way frightened. I do not write about those who report happy or productive encounters with other life forms. This part of the UFO subject does not interest me due to the fact I have not spent the time needed to have the knowledge  needed in order to properly write about it. I have spent my time interviewing abductees who had the other type of lost time abduction. I also have personal experience with this type of encounter so have focused my attention when writing more towards that type of event.
I can say without question that the overall percentage of people who have had to endure the more intense  type of experience are close to 90 % against any type of hypnotism or attempt of memory regression with a clear hard rejection when anyone even suggests this idea to them.
The reasons range from terror of having recall of an event they already know was horrifying to fear they will be harmed by way of the hypnotism.
The thinking of these abductees is that their abductors have methods and technology far advanced to anything here on earth which clearly means there are no humans on this earth that really have any idea what was done to them while they were taken.
They do know they had their memory altered or blocked as well as other things done to them physically. They  know that techniques were used on them that we have yet to understand or conquer. Allowing a human without the skill to understand what was done to them try to hypnotize or venture into an area they know little about that occurred while the person was abducted  could end in devastating consequences to the abductee.
What if the act of hypnotism caused trauma to the abductee’s brain sending them into convulsions or seizures? What if the hypnotism caused a reaction to what already had been done to the abductee causing a complete memory loss of everything leaving void of all memory at all? What if the act of trying to hypnotize the abductee annoyed those who abducted them causing yet another abduction to take place to redo what the human hypnotist damaged?
The possibilities of why this could be devastating to the abductee is endless . They feel they have had enough abuse at the hands of their abductors and care not to chance any other harm by way of those who have no idea what was done to them in the first place.
I admit that I agree completely with this thinking and would never allow anyone to hypnotize me.  I was the one who was victimized and do not care to benefit your life by possibly harming mine. I choose not to allow that to happen and believe there are far better ways to conduct research in these subjects. To sum it up many lost time memory or abductees who have little recall of a or partial memory only of their abduction will tell you they find the idea of hypnotism both frightening and repugnant.
Since we do not understand how or why or what was done to the people who are abducted  the abductees  feel it is dangerous and extremely irresponsible to simply charge in with what may be extremely primitive methods by alien abilities to areas we do not have any information or knowledge about.  It is the basic reason why I would never allow anyone to hypnotize me.
What if it caused extreme damage to my mind and brain that could not be repaired? What if it brought back memories so severe it caused a serious body reaction like a heart attack or worse? What if it brought back those who blocked the memories in the first place to correct the interference of what they have done for reasons only they understand? I certainly do not want to chance any of those things happening to me. Would you?
And so the case of pro and con hypnotism being used in abduction cases seems to continue with the lines drawn between the two groups of people who have encountered strange events leaving them without full recall. I suppose those who feel they have had a good experience will continue to allow hypnotism to be used in an effort to gain more information. I also know those who have had difficult abductions as well as physical harm will also continue to consider the idea of being hypnotized by  a mere human after being aware of what their abductors were capable of a repulsive idea.
I continue to stand firm against hypnotism and abduction cases as I feel it is extremely dangerous to the victims and think of it as just a continued form of abuse brought to them by those who have no right or skill to do so.
Remember that the abductees did not ask for, want or deserve being taken against their will and used like lab rats. My feeling is that they have been kidnapped, abused, physically altered and should not be used or abused any further. I have no idea what those who do regression using hypnotism  would do or could do if they caused a severe reaction to the abductee during a hypnotism  event or worse caused a new abduction where the poor victim was not returned only to meet a fate none of us could even imagine.
It is of course the right of anyone who has had to endure this type of encounter to make their own judgments on this subject. I respect whatever decisions they feel is right for them. All I ask is that they consider all sides of this issue when going about the aftermath of an unknown event making sure your well-being and safety s comes first and  foremost  during any research or exchange with those who were not part of the experience.
Living in a world full of so many things we do not understand can be difficult, wonderful, incredible, dangerous and extreme. The only way to survive all the unknowns that may come your way is to be aware at all times of not only your surroundings but of those who share this time and space with you.
I wish you only good days and happy nights and please be careful out there!

J. Allan (Jeff) Danelek

http://www.ourcuriousworld.com/
http://www.quest4spirit.org/

This bio is Jeff’s own story from his website:

A native of Minnesota but a resident of Colorado since 1969, my life has been a journey that has taken me down many different paths—some good and some not so good—but all of them useful in my journey. After a stint in the Navy (as a navigator and, briefly, an air traffic controller) I attended the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, specializing in illustration and graphic design. Since then, I have worked for a wide array of employers, from the public school system to the aerospace industry. I even worked for a couple of years laying out an international magazine for a local televangelist (who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty). After doing a gig as a part-time driving instructor (lotsa fun and a very educational experience) I’m back in the graphics industry once again while I wait for my “ship to come in”—whenever that might be. In the meantime, I continue to maintain this and several other websites, keep my hand in free-lance graphic work, continue to write for both myself and several other websites, teach classes at Colorado Free University and Front Range Community College here in Denver, and work on my tennis game (with little success). I currently live in Lakewood, Colorado (a suburb of Denver) with my wife, Carol.

Besides writing, my hobbies include—but are not necessarily limited to—art, politics and political history (I can name all 44 presidents along with the years they were president and what party they were, none of which has proven useful to date), world and military history, religion and spirituality, numismatics (coin collecting) paleontology, astronomy (and science in general) and Fortean subjects such as Bigfoot, UFO’s and things that go bump in the night. I enjoy writing both fiction and non-fiction, much of it with decidedly spiritual, religious, cryptozoological, historical and/or paranormal overtones, and consider writing to be my life’s passion.

I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t pursue my writing career with the prerequisite determination until fairly recently (I like to think of it as a progressive learning thing) with my first published feature article appearing in the March, 2002 issue of Fate magazine. Striking up a good relationship with Fate’s parent publisher, Galde Press, I decided to submit an entire manuscript for consideration and in September of 2003, I was blessed with my first book, Reconsidering Atlantis: A New Look at a Prehistoric Civilization (out of print). Later I was able to get a larger publisher (and one known for its paranormal-theme clientele), Llewellyn International, out of St. Paul, Minnesota, to look at some of my ideas, the result being that I have since managed to add six more titles to my repertoire: The Mystery of Reincarnation (May, 2005), The Case for Ghosts, (July, 2006), Atlantis, Lessons from a Prehistoric Civilization (June, 2008—basically a rework of my first book), UFOs: The Great Debate (December, 2008), 2012: Extinction or Utopia (November, 2009) and the Case for Reincarnation(June, 2010). I also have had a couple of books published by Adventures Unlimited Press out of Kempton, Illinois, one that deals with the mysterious sighting of “airships” reported over California and the Midwest in the winter of 1896-97 (the first UFO flap or something else?) entitled The Great Airship of 1897 and a second, which came out in May of 2011, on the early history of aviation entitled Phantoms of the Skies: The Lost History of Aviation from Antiquity through the Wright Brothers (with co-author Chuck Davis). Both books are especially important to me, as my publisher at AUP, the well-known Fortean writer David Hatcher Childress (yes, thatDavid Hatcher Childress) permitted me the opportunity to not only write the books, but do the layout and cover designs as well, which is a rare thing for publishers to do nowadays. (In fact, I can’t think of any full service publishers who do!) As such, my metaphorical hat goes off to David for letting me take the book from concept to final product and, especially, for the faith he has shown in permitting me the maximum latitude in pursuing these projects. As for the future, I am currently working on several not-yet-but-hopefully-soon-to-be-published novels and another book for David, (this one on the history of the submarine). All in all, things seem to be moving along pretty well, making me very enthusiastic about the coming years.

Perhaps the best part of being a writer has been the opportunities it has afforded me to meet a host of interesting people in the literary and paranormal community, among them real life ghost-hunters, past life regression hypnotists, Wiccans, and everything in between. It has also provided me the chance to do lots of radio (I’m told I have the face for it); over the last few years. I’ve repeatedly been a guest on Coast to Coast with George Noury and have appeared on Whitley Strieber’s Dreamland Radio Show, the x-zone with Rob McConnell, EUP Radio with Scott Colborn,Erskine OvernightPara-X Radio with Rusty O’Nhail, and lots of others. I’ve also had the opportunity to speak at several seminars, most recently at a paranormal conference at the haunted Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado as well as onboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach). All-in-all, a lot of fun.

My personal philosophy is that life is about learning and growing, both intellectually and spiritually, and that is the perspective from which I approach each project I undertake. As for writing, fame and wealth are not the goals (though they are acceptable consolation prizes); the point of the exercise is to give others a piece of yourself in the hopes that in your words they’ll find something that speaks to their needs, answers their questions, or even touches their heart. To have a stranger come up to you and thank you for expanding their awareness or giving them an answer to a question they have been pondering is what writing is all about, and if you can happen to make a living doing that in the process, then it’s worth all the effort. At least, that’s how I see it.

A Space of Time…

It’s not lost on me that it has been a month since our last live show for OffPlanet Radio. As I noted on the websites, the passing over of a beloved Elder of our family triggered the extended hiatus. Along with the planning and work that needed to be done for the scheduled Camp Hill II Energy and Healing Summit with Duncan and Miranda, there were also personal challenges for co-host, Chris Holly, who has had numerous family and health issues over the past month.

I note and express thanks for the kind wishes of listeners and friends that have been sent, along with some queries about the lack of activity. First, I don’t believe in “death”, as we morbidly know it, but I do honor the process of transition. I also know how to take cues from the cycles of Universe to obey the soul and body’s needs to rest, contemplate, and refresh.

Second, I don’t believe in “time”, in the literal, linear sense…that’s a matrix concept. What we call time is punctuations in a vast field of experience we call our “physical life”. The processes of birth and death (I have experienced both in the last six month period) are parentheses of what is just one phase of our ever-unfolding now-ness. It is not an inconsequential thing to stop and ponder; to rest and reflect, and not allow unique moments to simply pass without learning what they can teach us.

I also sensed that the show, and my own energies were beginning to feel somewhat tired—and by that I do not mean we did bad shows…the energies were simply tilting and we needed to step back and regroup. Both Chris Holly and I felt it was a time to reboot the show, and our own individual projects. So, while there have not been new shows recently, there is a tremendous amount of “back catalog” on both of our sites to partake.

Humans love novelty…the next “new” thing; often without really stopping to savor the things already sown. The western mindset of endless production and novely is another trap of the matrix mindset. The proverbial hamster wheel. And we do well to break the cycles. Without rest…the still point…there can arise no creative energetics waves. We need to observe the laws of Universe, not the laws of the matrix reality.

I will also note that I have been extremely challenged in keeping up with correspondence. Again, we are very limited in the handling of communications, as both Chris and myself do not have a support staff. If I have missed an email, phone call, or message from you, I apologize. Kindly re-send if you wish…or I will eventually reply as I sort through hundreds of unanswered messages. I also wish to deeply acknowledge and THANK those who continue to support us with gifts and donations…you deserve more than I can ever express…we send you a force field of much love.

We will continue the live shows on July 17, 2013, with guests to be announced. In the months to come we hope to provide not just new content (novelty), but a new vision and vitality towards the broad scope of the paranormal, consciousness, spirituality, and the future “now” of humanity. Stay tuned.
